‘Energy’ is Key Word for “Missa Latina” at L A Master Chorale May 31

Several Latin composers are finding ways through classical composition to bring the energy of the salsa rhythms to the concert hall. Composer Roberto Sierra completed “Missa Latina” in 2006. At its debut performance at Kennedy Center, the piece won more than simply rave reviews. The Washington Times said it is “the most significant symphonic premiere…since Britten’s “War Requiem”.

Joining conductor Grant Gershon and the Chorale are Heidi Grant Murphy, soprano, and Nathaniel Webster, baritone with the largest orchestra and largest number of singers on any of the Chorale’s season this year.
As with many contemporary compositions there is a theatrical bent to the performance as the percussion section goes full throttle into interplay between instruments of the orchestra and the chorus. Latin American rhythms and dance beats keep things more than a little alive.
Ticket prices are $19 to $124 and can be purchased by calling (800) 787-5262 or online at www.lamc.org. Student rush seats available two hours before performance. Walt Disney Concert Hall Box Office sales only on the day of the concert, two hours before performance.
