Arcadian Jon Mayer gets around. The jazz pianist has just returned from a European Tour but to settle back into the local groove, Mayer and his trio will be at Café 322 in Sierra Madre this coming Wednesday, July 15 playing from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Mayer has been in the jazz business a bunch of years, although there was a mysterious 13-year hiatus that ended in 1991 when he returned to the jazz scene in a big way. His gigs have included Friday Night Jazz at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Jazz Bakery and Café 322 where he has appeared numerous times. At Café 322 Mayer could be said to be one of the first jazz artists to perform there. Mayer and his trio backed singer Andrea Baker back in February of this year. Presuming his trio will consist of his usual team, Chris Conner (not the jazz singer Chris Conners) will be on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums.
Mayor’s piano style leans toward the Bill Evans, Bud Powell and Wynton Kelly. Local jazz fans are in for a harmonic treat with his full chording. If you are a candidate for jazz piano training, be sure to check in since Mayer accepts private students.
