Cal Phil Will Capture the Heart of Broadway Aug. 22, 23

File Foto - Victor Vener, Cal Phil 2008The California Philharmonic Orchestra concludes its five-concert summer series at The Arboretum in Arcadia this Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles. In Arcadia, gates open for picnicking at 5:30 p.m. with jazz guest artist performing. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. At Walt Disney Concert Hall, the concert begins at 2:00 p.m.
Cal Phil’s conductor, Victor Vener has tapped two singers to join the orchestra in presenting a host of tunes from Broadway musicals and Operettas. Soprano Khori Dastoor and tenor Danny Gurwin both have extensive resumés from stage performances. Dastoor, a native of Pasadena, has received reviews hailing her as one of the most promising rising starts of opera. She is equally at home in musicals. Gurwin is a Broadway veteran and critics have given approving nods for his 11 roles in both Off and On Broadway roles.
When Cal Phil titled its final concert “Broadway’s Best” the organization picked tunes from “Wicked”, “Mamma Mia!”, “Gypsy” and
“Hairspray”. To remind the audience of the musical background from which Broadway musicals sprang, Cal Phil has added selections from “Die Fledermaus” and “The Merry Widow”.
