An unusual film event will take place at the Marjorie Branson Performance Space at Boston Court, Pasadena at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.
At that time, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” the 1919 German expressionist film classic will be shown in a newly restored digital version with a live electronic score conceived and performed by double bassist Tom Peters. The early horror film is considered one of the most important examples of German Expressionist cinema. Peters says, “It is one of the earliest horror films…and even after 90 years, it still has the power to shock!”
This performance will be the second time Peters has developed a screen property for live electronic bass. His first was for another early horror film, “Golem”, the 1920 film most often viewed as the precursor of the File Foto - Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - photo 2Frankenstein movies of the 1930′s. This time, the theme concerns a doctor who heads an insane asylum and keeps a corpse in a coffin. Just in time for Halloween, no?
Peters, who has performed with Southwest Chamber Music since 1998, is a member of the Long Beach Symphony and Ensemble Green, a contemporary music ensemble. He has released a recording of John Cage’s “26′ 1.1499 for String Player” and with KPFK’s John Schneider as narrator, Cage’s “45′ for a Speaker”, a composite of Cage’s lectures about his music with bass interjections. Peters also teaches double bass at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State, Long Beach.
His performance at the Marjorie Branson Performance Space at Boston Court is a featured event of the Pasadena Arts Council’s Oct. 24 ArtNight celebrating the opening of Pasadena Art& Ideas Festival with the theme, “Origins”. As an original in the horror film genre, Peters notes, “this performance should fit quite nicely into the theme.”
Tickets are $20 general admission; $15 for seniors and students when purchased in advance; or $25 and $20 at the door.
Music at the Court series is held at Boston Court Performing Arts Center, 70 N. Mentor Ave., Pasadena. Information: (626) 683-6883 or visit www.bostoncourt.org.
