Coleman Chamber Season Opens Oct 4 with Enso String Quartet

File Foto - Enso String Quartet - Coleman 2010 seasonFor the 106th consecutive time, the Coleman Chamber Concert series will open at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 at Beckman Auditorium on the campus of Caltech with the Enso String Quartet. Quartet members are Maureen Nelson and John Marcus, violins; Melissa Reardon, viola; and Richard Belcher, cello. The ensemble will play the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Alberto Ginastera and Jean Sibelius. While you may prefer the more established music of the past, this ensemble has made its mark in the contemporary. The Ginastera Quartet No. 1, composed in 1947 does not really qualify in most people’s minds as “contemporary”. Enso String Quartet, founded in 1999, has made a substantial mark in new music winning competition prizes and recording dates for such composers as Joan Tower, Anthony Brandt and Karim al Zand. The Enso’s program (the name derived from the Japanese zen painting of the circle, representing many things in the circle of life) is the first in a series of six concerts the Coleman Chamber Concert will present this season. Even though they will be followed by the venerable Emerson String Quartet, Schubert Ensemble of London, Europa Galante, Fincke- Han-Setzer, and the Takacs String Quartet, this looks to be the best of the season.
Season subscription tickets are $99 to $210; individual concert tickets are $22 to $40; students $10. For season information and tickets please call (626) 793-4191. For individual tickets, contact the Caltech ticket office at (626) 395-4652. Beckman Auditorium, on the campus of Caltech. Parking is free at lots south of Del Mar Blvd., between Wilson and Chester Aves. as well as in parking structures at 341 and 405 S. Wilson Ave.
