The famed Emerson String Quartet visits Pasadena on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Beckman Auditorium to perform once again for the Coleman Chamber Concert series. The program, which begins at 3:30 p.m., will offer Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet in E-flat major; Leos Janacek’s Quartet No. 1, known as the “Kreutzer Sonata”; and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 9 in F-flat major.
The somewhat bizarre story behind Janacek’s “Kreutzer Sonata” is that Leo Tolstoy wrote a novella in 1887. That story involves a man who murdered his wife, a violinist, who apparently had an affair—and she was a violinist in an ensemble that performed Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata. OK? Janacek wrote his musical anecdote in 1923.
Tickets prices range from $22 to $40. Beckman Auditorium is on the campus of Caltech, with parking south of Del Mar Blvd. on Michigan Ave., Pasadena. Information: (626) 395-4652.
