A guitarist in a restaurant generally goes unheralded, playing quietly in the corner. We have found a guitarist of exceptional talent who, while playing quietly in the corner, receives attention from diners at Madeleines Restaurant on Green St. in Pasadena: Carlos Velasco.
Velasco, if I got it right, is from Colombia. But, no matter, from the moment he struck up a couple of his own compositions, and smoothly transitioned into Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “One Note Samba”, his talent was obvious.
Velasco is fluent, musically, as he is linguistically. Musically he handles classical guitar, Flamenco, jazz, tango, Brazilian and Peruvian music. Linguistically he speaks, in addition to English, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Greek and Russian. Not your ordinary guy.
Oh, by the way, he is a singer as well, having appeared in a production of “La Traviata” with the Pasadena Lyric Opera Company.
Carlos Velasco appears at Madeleines Restaurant Friday and Saturday nights beginning about 7:30 p.m. Madeleines Restaurant is located at 1030 E. Green St., Pasadena.
