At least once a year the Friends of the South Pasadena Library present a jazz program as part of their otherwise totally classical series, Sunday Afternoon Restoration Concert Series.
For the Sunday, Nov. 15 concert the Restoration Series will bring in one of jazz’ premiere saxophonists, Pete Christlieb; and Christlieb in turn is bringing along 10 sidemen.
Christlieb is known for his tenor sax work in television and motion picture soundtracks and recordings and his 20-year stint with Doc Severinsen’s band on the “Tonight” show. With a background in classical music (his Dad was a bassoonist) he has been associated with the best of the jazz world. Along with Christlieb for this performance is a stellar group of jazzmen who are the most prominent studio musicians in town. Gene Cipriano, Gary Foster, Kevin Garren, Terry Harrington, Jeff
Bunnel on sax; Ron Stout, trumpet; Linda Small-Christlieb, trombone; Putter Smith, bass; Steve Schaeffer, drums; and Joe Bagg, piano. Just a sampling of credits this group has racked up: Harrington performed the sax voice for Lisa on “The Simpsons”; Bunnel can be heard in the Academy Awards orchestra; Stout has done just about all the major recordings and soundtracks, also teaches at Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach; Putter Smith (who lives in South Pasadena) is an author, noted musician and as an actor appeared in “Diamonds are Forever” in a feature role.
The Sunday Afternoon Restoration Concert Series begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5. Admission is $18 at the door if space permits.
The Sunday Afternoon series is sponsored by The Friends of South Pasadena Library. Information on this or other concerts in the series can be found at www.friendsofsopaslibrary.org or at (626) 799-6333.
