Danvers (Mass) High School Falcon Marching Band return to the Rose Parade after raising $50,000 for the 130-member band to make the trek.
Twenty-four bands will march down Colorado Blvd. on New Years Day. These bands are definitely, in the terms of the theme of the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Ca. “A Cut Above the Rest”.
Bands come from across the country, and one, the Pedro Molina Banda Musical Latina, comes from Guatemala. The 130-member Danvers High school Falcon Marching Band comes from Danvers, Mass., after raising $50,000. Locally, Glendora Tartan Band and Pageantry, marches again, but only after raising $80,000, in part to renew band uniforms which can cost as much as $450—more for some special uniforms.
Music Committee chairman of the Tournament of Roses, Dr. Stacey Houser announced the names of those bands accepted this year back in May. Those bands are the Banda Musical Latina Pedro Molina, Conroe Tiger Band, Danvers High School Falcon Marching Band, El Dorado Golden Hawks, Glendora Tartan band and Pageantry, Kansai Honors Green Band, Los
Angeles Unified School District All-District High School Honor Band, Marian Catholic High School Band, Millard West High School Wildcat Marching Band, Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band, Ohio University Marching Band, Pickerington Central Marching Tiger Band, Big-10 and Pac-10 marching bands, South Kitsap High School, Soddy Daisy High School Marching Band, U.S. Marine Coirps West Coast Composite Band, Walton High School and Webb City High School
Distinguished bands of the parade include the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band—which includes students of the PCC Lancer Marching Band and alumni (some quite well known in our musical community); and the Salvation Army Tournament of Roses Band, a group that has marched every year since 1920. The ladies of the Salvation Army no longer march in high-heel shoes as they did up until only a few years ago.
Sponsor of the bands in the paprade is Farmers Insurance. Farmers Insurance float entry for the 2010 parade is titled “Salute to the Bands”.
Let’s applaud everyone’s efforts.
Happy New Year.
