Art of the Baroque Flute in the Spotlight at Musica Angelica

Stephen Schultz, Baroque Flutist

Musica Angelica will present a concert dedicated to “The Art of the Baroque Flute” this Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at the Neighborhood Church, Pasadena.
Principal flutist of Musica Angelica, Stephen Schultz will be heard with ensemble members: principal 2nd violinist Janet Strauss; principal violist, Suzanna Giordano-Gignac; co-principal cellist Joanna Blendulf and guest harpsichordist, Katherine Shao in a program of hit tunes of the Baroque era.
Schultz has been hailed for his flawless technique in concert tours, symphony halls, as a recording artist, and for his leadership of the instrumental ensemble, American Baroque.
The program will include the works of masters who added the flute to their compositions as the Baroque, or transverse, flute was introduced. Works by Handel, Couperin, Bach, Hotteterre, Telemann and Quantz will be performed. Handel’s Trio Sonata in G #4, one of 12 sonatas written about 1730 and probably the best known flute work, will begin the concert. Two of the composers most are not familiar with, Hotteterre and Quantz, were well-known 18th century flutists who performed, composed and wrote treatises on flute playing and were instrumental in securing a space in orchestras, replacing the recorder. Works by these two are also included in the performance – Jacques Martin Hotteterre’s Suite #3 in G and Johann Joaquim Quantz’ Quartet for flute and strings.
Musica Angelica performs its chamber concert, “The Art of the Baroque Flute” at the Neighborhood Church, 301 N. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena. Tickets are $39 and can be ordered online at www.musicaangelica.org.
