Crown City Symphony is following its motto, “Ability, not age” when it performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 on Feb. 27 and 28 in Altadena and Pasadena in two free concerts and the music of Von SuppĂ© and Mussorgsky.
You see, Mozart was probably 17 when he composed this, the last of his violin concertos. Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Mischa Lefkowitz will be the soloist in the piece that Albert Einstein praised as “unsurpassed for brilliance, tenderness and wit.”
The orchestra’s program, conducted by Marvin Neumann, will also include Franz Von SuppĂ©’s “Poet and Peasant Overture” (age 27) and Modeste Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” (age 47).
Lekowitz (no age given) holds an international reputation for his violin solo performances with major orchestras around the world. He has served as guest Violin Professor as a member of the faculty at UC Irvine and artist-in-residence at Chapman University. He has been a member of the L A Phil since 1977.
The Crown City Symphony’s concerts will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Altadena Senior Center, 560 E. Mariposa Ave., Altadena and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the First Baptist Church of Pasadena, 75 N. Marengo Ave., Pasadena.
The orchestra was founded in 2003 under the sponsorship of the Pasadena Senior Center and is funded in part by grants from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation, the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division and the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. Roberta Wilcox serves as manager. For information, please call (626) 797-1994.
