Camerata Pacifica Selects Varied Program for May 18 at Huntington

Adrian Spence

Camerata Pacifica wings its way into our area tonight, Tuesday, May 18 for the final concert of this season. With the music of Devienne, Reinecke, Bowen and Schumann, the 8:00 p.m. concert in Fellow Hall at The Huntington Library in San Marino, the chamber ensemble has selected a widely varied program both by style and era. While the Camerata Pacifica regulars Warren Jones, piano; Catherine Leonard, violin; Richard Yongjae O’Neill, viola and Ani Aznavoorian, cello are the performers here, one number will have Jones at the piano and Camerata Pacifica’s Artistic Director, Adrian Spence on flute for the water-y splendor of the Reinecke Sonata for Flute in E-minor “Undine”.
Spence is a fine flutist, and with his Irish brogue is charming to a “T”. He has built the Camerata Pacifica into a well-honed ensemble and carries the musical experience to the audience. He is brashly informal, perhaps just what we need today to attract a new generation of music lovers. Hearing him perform this sonata is a special treat in this program. Spence will also be heard in the Francois Devienne Due in C-minor for flute and viola.
Other works on the program include Edwin York Bowen’s Phantasy in F-major for viola and piano and Robert Schumann’s Quartet in E-flatfor piano and strings.
Tickets are $42, student rush one-half hour before performance, $10. For tickets and information please call (805) 884-8410 or visit www.cameratapacifica.org.
