Webber’s Music at Arboretum – it’s the Cats Meow: July 10

Victor Vener, CalPhil's popular conductor always adds his insights about the music.

The California Philharmonic Orchestra continues its concerts at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden Saturday evening, July 10, and at Walt Disney Concert Hall Sunday afternoon, July 11 with a varied program of Broadway and opera. Saturday’s concert is at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s concert is at 2:00 p.m.
Conductor Victor Vener will lead the orchestra and singing guest stars in the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Giuseppi Verdi and Giocomo Puccini. Like many of the programs this year, these are repeat items, if not exact numbers, heard during the 15 year history of the CalPhil organization.
“The wonderful thing about composers like Lloyd Webber, Verdi and Puccini is that their body of work is as vast as it is extraordinary,” Vener said. “We have so many marvelous options to chose from that no program is ever the same. The works we present vary each season.”
Excerpts from “Phantom of the Opera”, “Cats”, “Evita” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” will be held up for sonic inspection against arias from “Aida”, “La Traviata”, “Tosca” and “Turandot”.
Guest artists are sopranos Angel Blue and Emily Dyer, tenor Mathew Edwardsen, baritone Ralph Cato, and the Cal Phil Chorale directed by Marya Basaraba. Emil Dyer, a senior at Valley Christian High School, is making her Arcadia debut with the orchestra at this program.
Ticket prices start at $20 and can be ordered online at calphil.org or by calling (626) 300-8200.
